Update: Yes, it was indeed launched and it’s called the iPhone 3G S but no video calling as yet.

There are rumors abound regarding the next release of the iPhone, every tech blog known to man is all over this like a fat kid on a smarty.

The iPhone 3.0 SDK has pretty much been proven to support video so a iPhone Video product seems to make sense. What kind of video? Recording full frame video is one thing but transporting that over 3G is quite another. My guess is it will not support real-time streaming or video calling on 3G, the question is will it deliver the goods on WiFi.

It will be interesting to see what happens at WWDC (running from the 8th to the 12th), the new iPhone is sure to launch at this event.

Sony Electronics and GlowPoint, Inc. today announced the availability of Sony’s IVE or “Instant Video Everywhere” service powered by GlowPoint, the first comprehensive IP-based video communications solution that can be used anyplace where there is broadband access.

Sony’s IVE service, powered by GlowPoint, enables users to conduct “face-to-face” video conversations with colleagues, friends and family as easily as using a telephone. The IVE (pronounced “ivy”) service portfolio has been developed to extend across multiple Sony product lines, moving beyond the conference room and typical videoconferencing equipment to desktop or laptop computers and other video enabled devices.

Looks like Sony has their crosshairs clearly focused on providing a feature-full portable communications and entertainment system. Since we can browse the web on this thing, and it has a USB port, Wi-Fi and a TCP stack you would think we should be able hack together a softphone for VoIP. Video will come later, camera attachment.

I will keep you posted.

I rarely use a real telephone anymore, it’s either my mobile device when I am on the road or my softphone when I am at work or home.

It would be great if I could record video conferences via my softphone so when I have an interview with my remote collegues [PR contacts, executives on the road etc.] I can post it to my internal corporate blog for the appropriate personelle to review at their own schedule.

It’s coming :)
